"Under your nose" is a common phrase in English. It's derived from the literal sense of something being physically located below your nose, or very close to you. However, in everyday conversation, it's used metaphorically to describe a situation where something is present or happening very close to you, and in plain sight, but you fail to notice or appreciate it - kind of like looking for your glasses while they're sitting on your head! For example, let's say you've been searching high and low for your car keys only to find out they've been in your pocket all along. Your friend might humorously advise you, "Next time, check under your nose first!" Over time, usage of this phrase has extended to more abstract notions, like missing an obvious solution to a problem, or failing to recognize a talent or opportunity you've had all along. In this way, "under your nose" serves as a playful reminder that sometimes, the thing we're seeking is closer than we think.
