The singular form of "oxen" is "ox". Interestingly, the word "oxen" is one of the few exceptions in the English language that doesn't conform to the regular rules for forming plurals. Most English words form their plurals by adding "s" or "es", such as "cat" becoming "cats", or "bus" becoming "buses". However, "ox" extends back to Old English, where plural forms were often different and more varied than they are today. "Oxen" stands out as a linguistic relic of an earlier time when English was a different beast altogether!
