This is what goPenpal answered

The past tense of the word "break" is "broke". Interestingly in English, we have what's called 'regular' and 'irregular' verbs. Regular verbs follow a pattern in their past tense form, commonly adding "-ed" at the end, like "played" or "jumped". However, irregular verbs like "break" don't follow these rules and hence, "break" becomes "broke" in past tense. There's really no trick to it, just memorization and practice! Now, isn't English a fun language to break...I mean, 'broke' your head around?
